Lake Forest was founded on February 21, 1861, and 2011 is the community’s 150th anniversary. The Historical Society and the 150th Historical Activities Committee are spearheading projects and planning events to celebrate our heritage and document and preserve our history. Lake Forest Legacy Project: We are collecting historical information about Lake Forest institutions and businesses. The information collected will be used to build a special archive about Lake Forest institutions at the Historical Society, where it will be preserved and made available to the public for research. All Lake Forest businesses, organizations, clubs, and groups are invited to take part! Send a copy of your institution's history to the Historical Society or use the form provided below to create a brief history. DATE: Ongoing.
Charter Signing Reenactment: Reenactors will recreate the founding of Lake Forest at the City Council meeting closest to the anniversary date. DATE: February 22, 2011
Oral History: The Historical Society’s annual collaboration with Lake Forest College students will focus on founding members of local institutions to document these important, but often unrecorded, stories. Contact Curator Laurie Stein if you are interested in participating. DATE: February and March 2011.
Tree Booklet: A booklet focusing on our community’s trees, including the fascinating history our trees have witnessed over the years. The booklet will be distributed at the Arbor Day celebration. DATE: April 29, 2011
Spirits of the Past Cemetery Tour: A living history tour of Lake Forest Cemetery sharing the stories of local residents who are buried there. DATE: October 2011.
