History of the Organization
On January 6, 1972, the Lake Forester and the Lake Bluff Review carried
an article, which stated, “In the midst of change, Lake Forest has a unique
past, one which should not be forgotten. Surprisingly, Lake Forest is
one of the few communities in the area without a historical society.”
Almost simultaneously, the same thought occurred to several civic-minded
residents of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, and they determined to remedy
the situation by forming a local historical society. The first board met
on April 22, 1972. One of the society’s first official projects was to
support the saving of The Evergreens, a mid-nineteenth century estate.
For many years, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society (LFLBHS)
collected artifacts and had offices at the Gorton Community Center. In
the fall of 1998, the LFLBHS took possession of the former Masonic Lodge
that had been the carriage house of The Evergreens. The move to the new
building enables the historical society to present interpretive exhibits
about the rich history of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff area and to provide
programming and research assistance.
Our Mission
The mission of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society is to make
local history a vital force in community life:
- through educational
programs of historical value;
- through the preservation
and display of historical artifacts; and
- through service
as an important community resource.
Collections
The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society collection consists of several
thousand objects, documents, photographs, architectural drawings and books
that tell the story of the people, places and events of Lake Forest and
Lake Bluff. We encourage donations of three-dimensional objects, library
materials and archival materials for interpretive use and research.
