Note the new date! Join us for the screening of the PBS film "Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham and the American City." On hand will be the program’s Director, Judith Paine McBrien, who will offer an insider’s view of the development, challenges and ideas behind the film’s production.

About the Film:
Daniel Hudson Burnham is one of America’s—and Chicago’s --best known architects and city planners. He built some of the first skyscrapers in the world including The Rookery Building in Chicago and later as D.H. Burnham & Company became known for such landmarks as the Flatiron Building in New York City and Union Station in Washington, D.C.

In 1893, Burnham directed construction of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, an event that helped inspire the City Beautiful Movement in towns and cities across the country. He subsequently developed plans for major cities in America and abroad -- all before the profession of city planning existed. The 1909 Plan of Chicago is considered his masterwork.

Burnham had many connections to Lake Forest, including friendship with fellow members of the Commercial Club of Chicago, with his co-author of the 1909 Plan of Chicago Edward Bennett, and with clients for whom he designed homes in the area.
About the Director/Producer:
McBrien, a Ragdale Foundation Trustee and Fellow, directs the Archimedia Workshop. She writes, produces films, and lectures about architecture, landscapes, history and design. In 2013 she received the Excellence in Architectural Media Award from the Society of Architectural Historians; in 2014 she was honored at the Chicago Public Library Foundation at the Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner for her literary contributions to Chicago.

*Chicago Architecture Foundation Docents who attend both the Thomas Dyja Lecture and the Burnham Film Screening pay only half price for the Burnham Film and Talk. Call 847.234.5253 for details!
