The Mystery of the Gardener's Daughter

Nearly 200 people became members of the jury in one of the most sensational murder trials of the early twentieth century. In 1916, the unexplained death of a Lake Forest girl pushed even the Great War off the nation's front pages. Was William Orpet, the boyfriend of Marian Lambert, guilty or innocent? By a margin of around 40 votes, the jury found him not guilty, mirroring the original verdict in 1916.
