west side stories exhibit opens april 25

Our latest exhibit, West Side Stories, will launch with a members' preview event at our museum on Friday, April 25 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will be open at the Historical Society through the end of the 2014. Parts of it will go on tour at various locations in west Lake Forest, starting with Everett School, Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, and the Telegraph Road Metra train station. More...
 
 
 

 

centennial family Awards + walking tour | may 4

Our 2014 Annual Meeting will take place at Dickinson Hall, home of the Senior Center, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Ridge Farm Preventorium (for which Dickinson Hall was originally built). Three families will be honored with Centennial Family Awards, and guests will have an opportunity to take an historical and architectural tour of the site. This event is free and open to the public. Talk: 19th century Funeral Practices | JUne 12

Playing the role of a Civil War-era doctor, Jon Austin will present a first-person lecture using a re-enactor "corpse" as a visual aid. He'll talk about the preparation of dead Civil War soldiers for shipping and burial, 19th century mourning rituals, Lincoln's funeral, and the ways in which modern funeral practices have developed over time.
